New Gold Medal for Caliterra in the Sommelier Wine Awards 2010

Sommelier Wine Awards it’s Britain’s only on-trade wine competition. Entered bottles have to be available to the UK’s on-trade, and not in mainstream off-trade outlets. This makes it very different from other competitions, and perfect for the restaurant trade.

Unlike any other wine competition, all the judges are sommeliers, and the bottles sent in are all on-trade/independent merchant exclusive. It means that you can pick any of the wines from this booklet with confidence that you’re not going to find them in the supermarket down the road.
When judging, our tasters were looking for character, typicity, balance and – perhaps more importantly – versatility, food-friendliness and value for money. All the things, in other words, that you want from a wine. And they were hard-hearted and commercial in their decision-making. If they didn’t think a wine would sell, no matter how good it was, they didn’t put it on the Gold List. The result is winning wines that will add personality and value to anyone’s list.

After the first round of tasting, we narrowed down our selection to the most interesting and versatile wines that delivered for the price this became the Sommelier´s Shortlist. These 300 or so wines were retasted, and from here we picked the best of the best to make up our 100-strong Gold List.
